Two new research papers have been produced at CNMAT during the past semester.
The Contemporary Gugak Orchestra is presenting Edmund Campion's Audible Numbers on Friday and Saturday, September 27-28, 2019, at the National Gugak Center in Seoul, S. Korea. The piece was composed using the Open Music/TESSELLATE library developed by Matthew Schumaker, Edmund Campion, and Jean Bresson at CNMAT.

Jean Geoffroy, percussionist, and international soloist, is in residence this week at CNMAT working with composer Edmund Campion on projects and collaborations with the Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse de Lyon (CNSMDL) and Générateur de Ressources et d’Activités Musicales Exploratoires (GRAME).

Deep Learning Approaches for Computer-Assisted Orchestration
Computer-assisted orchestration is a recognized topic in Music Information Retrieval (MIR). Systems ‘Orchidea’ and ‘Ato-ms’ have been used by composers in different communities for many years.
CNMAT is happy to welcome back Percussionist Russell Greenberg for a visit! Russell is a founding member of the YARN/WIRE quartet and has collaborated over the years with many UC Berkeley composers.
The CNMAT Users group has organized a mini-residency with the New York-based percussion duo Radical 2 from December 5-7, 2019. Radical 2, Levy Lorenzo (photo right) and Dennis Sullivan (photo left) is an irrational, classification-defying duo that explores the intersection of theatric, percussive and electronic mediums. Olivier is a researcher in computational music analysis at RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion, at the University of Oslo, Norway.
CNMAT welcomes Visiting Researcher, Scientist, and Artist, Ali Momeni for Spring 2020.
Ali Momeni works at the intersection of art, sound, design, and technology. While at CNMAT, Ali will continue the development of ml.lib, a library of interactive machine learning tools for musicians and artists; and second, design and fabrication of several hybrid physical-digital instruments for drawing and music-making.
CNMAT welcomes Visiting Composer and Researcher Daniele Ghisi for 2020. Together with Assistant Professor Carmine Cella, he will explore several advanced topics in computer-assisted orchestration and deep learning for music.

As part of its upcoming 50th Anniversary Season, SFCMP will collaborate with CNMAT to feature SOUND ENCOUNTERS, a concert of sound art in an installation-style setting. SFCMP percussionist Willian Winant will perform James Tenney's Koan: Having Never Written a Note for Percussion followed by performances and pieces from emerging sound artists and composers Maija Hynninen, Jon Kulpa, and Jon Yu. CNMAT-affiliated artist Claudia Hart received an award from the Esports Digital Art Prizes for 2019. Her acceptance of the award included the creative reuse of ZOOM's virtual background feature. The acceptance video went viral and points to a playful emerging art practice in the time of crisis -- something Hart calls ON ZOOMOLOGY.
