“Owen Weaver, a New York percussionist with a burgeoning solo career…was intensely focused, his tattooed arms moving like a clock’s."
– Gramophone

Through a combination of original music, improvisation and collaboration with leading composers of his generation, percussion soloist Owen Weaver’s performances combine the forces of rhythm, noise, beauty and stasis while seeking the musical potential in everyday life. In his Bay Area debut, he brings an exciting program of music for percussion and electronics:

Memory Palace by Christopher Cerrone is a haunting work scored for an array of homemade instruments that underscores the powerful associations between music and memory.

Alvin Lucier's Silver Street Car for the Orchestra explores the astonishing range of sound contained within a single metal triangle.

Temazcal by Javier Alvarez takes the folkloric musical tradition, Joropo, and turns it on its ear, yielding a virtuosic solo for maracas.

Nils Bultmann is a violist, improviser, and composer, committed to developing his own voice within the context of a wide variety of musical styles and art forms. His versatile background ranges from undergraduate studies in German literature, violist with the New World Symphony, to recording and touring with jazz Saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell. He has been active in collaborative projects of dance and film in addition to his love of the more standard classical music repertoire.

For this performance, Nils draws upon his equally strong talents as composer and improviser to present an wide-ranging picture of the solo viola.
