Abstract

The structure of the Open Sound Control (OSC)content format is introduced with historical context. The needs for temporal synchronization anddynamic range of audio control data are describedin terms of accuracy, precision, bit-depth, bit-rate,and sampling frequency. Specic details are givenfor the case of instrumental gesture control, spatialaudio control and synthesis algorithm control. The consideration of various transport mechanismsused with OSC is discussed for datagram, serialand isochronous modes. A summary of designapproaches for describing audio control data isshown, and the case is argued that multi-layeredinformation-rich representations that support multiplestrategies for describing semantic structure arenecessary.
