Getting to CNMAT:

CNMAT from UC Berkeley Main Campus:

The basic idea is to head North and leave the main campus. The map above is part of a more complete map of the campus.

If you leave by passing under Tolman Hall, simply cross the road and head up Arch Street. The traffic at this crossing is heavy during busy times of day so be careful! CNMAT is on the left at the brow of the hill.

If you leave through the North Gate, walk one block up Euclid and turn left on Ridge Rd. until you hit a crossroads. Cross Scenic Avenue and le Conte Avenue and proceed westwardly across the grounds of the Pacific School of Religion. You will be surrounded by various styles of church buildings. Descend the steps and carefully cross Arch street. Drivers regularly ignore pedestrians and cross traffic at the brow of this steep hill. You are now outside CNMAT.

CNMAT by Road:

North 101 (San Francisco/Daly City)

  • Exit to San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge
  • Exit to 80 East
  • Exit University Avenue
  • Continue East on University Avenue for approximately 1.5 miles to Oxford Street
  • Left on Oxford for two blocks
  • Right on Hearst Avenue.
  • Second left turn up Arch Street (the left fork)
  • CNMAT is on left at the brow of the hill (beware of oncoming traffic)

From Westbound 24

  • Take College Avenue exit off Route. 24 (exit runs along Miles Avenue. College begins at 1st traffic light)
  • Turn right on College Avenue (BART Station is on your left)
  • Continue on College to Bancroft Way (College Avenue ends at Bancroft)
  • Turn left on Bancroft Way to Shattuck
  • Turn right at University Avenue and continue east one block to Oxford
  • Left on Oxford for two blocks
  • Right on Hearst Avenue.
  • Second left turn up Arch Street (the left fork)

Westbound from Highway 13

  • Continue on Highway 13 to Tunnel Road (Berkeley exit)
  • Continue west on Tunnel Road (becomes Ashby at Domingo - near the Claremont Hotel)
  • Turn right at Shattuck
  • Turn right at University Avenue and continue east one block to Oxford
  • Left on Oxford for two blocks
  • Right on Hearst Avenue.
  • Second left turn up Arch Street (the left fork)

I- 80 East (San Francisco; Oakland) or I-80 WEST (Sacramento; Vallejo; Richmond)

  • Exit University Avenue
  • Continue east on University Avenue for approximately 1.5 miles to Oxford Street
  • Left on Oxford for two blocks
  • Right on Hearst Avenue.
  • Second left turn up Arch Street (the left fork)

Westbound I-580

  • Exit Highway 24 East/Walnut Creek/Berkeley Stay in Right lane and take 51st Street exit
  • Turn left at Shattuck (first signal light)
  • Turn Right at University Avenue to Oxford
  • Left on Oxford for two blocks
  • Right on Hearst Avenue.
  • Second left turn up Arch Street (the left fork)

North I-880 (San Jose; Hayward; Oakland Airport)

  • Exit to 980
  • Exit 580 West (to San Francisco)
  • Exit 80 East (to Berkeley)
  • Exit at University Avenue
  • Continue East on University Avenue for approximately 1.5 mile to Oxford
  • Left on Oxford for two blocks
  • Right on Hearst Avenue.
  • Second left turn up Arch Street (the left fork)

From Central Berkeley BART station

  • Get off at the Berkeley Station (aka Downtown Berkeley)
  • Walk east on Center Street for 1 block
  • Turn left (North) on Oxford and walk for two blocks
  • Turn right (East) on Hearst Avenue and walk for two blocks
  • Second left turn up Arch Street (the left fork). This intersection is dangerous; be careful crossing the street!

From North Berkeley BART station

  • Get off at the North Berkeley Station
  • Walk east across BART parking lot and cross Sacramento Street.
  • Proceed North on Sacramento and turn right on Virginia Street
  • Continue East on Virginia up the hill for about ten blocks, crossing Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Shattuck Ave., Oxford St., and Spruce St.
  • Virginia curves at the intersection of Arch Street; turn right on Arch.
  • CNMAT is at the brow of the hill

From the Airports:

From the San Francisco Airport

Contact a shuttle service. Some offer door to door service. Others will drop you downtown from where you can follow the instructions from the Berkeley BART above.

From the Oakland Airport

Contact a shuttle service. Some offer door to door service. Others will drop you downtown from where you can follow the instructions from the Berkeley BART above.

From the San Jose Airport

Contact a shuttle service. Some offer door to door service. Others will drop you downtown from where you can follow the instructions from the Berkeley BART above.

CNMAT Parking:

Parking is a challenge around CNMAT and in Berkeley in general. Much of the area close to CNMAT is a vigorously enforced 2 hour zone. On special request we can temporarily free up very limited staff parking for visiting dignitaries or special needs.

Public Parking

City of Berkeley Center Street Garage

2025 Center Street between Shattuck and Milvia Street (nearest Parking to University Hall). Cost: $.75 - $2 per hour.

City of Berkeley Sather Gate Garage

Durant between Dana and Telegraph (nearest parking to Student Union - south side parking). Cost: $.75 - $2 per hour.

University of California Student Union Garage,

Bancroft just below Telegraph (south side parking). Cost: $1.50 per hour

Public Parking Lot

located at the corner of Durant and College . Entrance on Durant (south side parking). Cost: $.75 per hour or $6.00 all day. Purchase ticket from dispensing machines and follow printed directions. No attendant on duty. Machines will take $1 bills and quarters.

Metered parking

Located on city streets around campus there are 1 and 2 hour meters. Usually metered parking is difficult to find and does not allow enough time for your campus visit. Meters take quarters and nickels. Parking for Tour Buses Bus parking is available at the white curb areas on Bancroft between Piedmont and College Avenue (near the law school and University Art Museum) and between Bowditch and Telegraph in front of Sproul Hall (near MLK Jr. Student Union).
